Mike
The Potato Shark Who Almost Didn't Get His Chance
Mike was going to die for two reasons that should never determine whether a life is worth saving:
He was a senior.
And he needed medical care.
Mike was sitting in a kill shelter when he was placed on the euthanasia list for medical reasons.
And somehow, an already heartbreaking story became even harder.
Someone recognized him.
His family was tagged.
They knew where he was.
But no one came for him.
We could spend a lot of time sitting in that part of Mike's story.
Wondering what happened.
Wondering how this sweet, ridiculous little potato of a dog ended up there.
But that's not where we want his story to live.
Because we saw him.
And a few weeks ago, Mike came to Always & Furever.
Since then, he has filled the Little Red Barn with exactly what we believe rescue should be filled with:
Love.
Laughter.
Joy.
He's also earned himself a very fitting nickname:
The Potato Shark. 🦈🥔
Because Mike may look like a sleepy little potato most of the time...
But get within nibbling distance, and the shark comes out.
Thumbs.
Shoulders.
And even the occasional unsuspecting backside.
Apparently, they're all fair game.
And soon, someone is traveling more than 1,000 miles just for him.
On October 9, Mike's adopter will fly in from Connecticut, rent a car, and drive him all the way home.
She knows he still has medical hurdles ahead.
We believe Mike may need heart surgery, and there are more appointments and testing still to come.
She's still all in.
That's the magic of this community.
Someone can live halfway across the country and somehow find one little senior dog in Kansas and know immediately:
"That one. I choose that one."
And when Mike leaves, something else beautiful happens.
His space opens.
Another dog gets a chance.
Another soul sitting in a shelter gets seen.
Another story gets to begin.
That's why fostering matters.
That's why adoption matters.
And it's why creating more space matters so much.
Because there are countless Mikes sitting in shelters right now.
Beautiful.
Funny.
Quirky.
Perfectly imperfect souls we may never get the chance to know simply because there isn't enough space, enough medical care, or enough resources.
That is what our dream is trying to change.
We dream of shelters that feel different.
Places filled with love and joy.
Places where peace matters just as much as survival.
Places you can walk into and somehow leave with your heart fuller than when you arrived.
More than 9,000 lives have already been touched by this little rescue that began with a tiny red barn.
Think about that.
Thousands of individual stories.
Thousands of second chances.
And all from a farm limited to just 19 animals at a time.
Now imagine what becomes possible when we have more room to say yes.
When we have our own donor-funded veterinary center.
When we have more peaceful spaces for animals who need time.
When Homestead East gives us the ability to reach even more souls who otherwise might never get their chance.
That is why we're dreaming bigger.
Every donation.
Every share.
Every foster home.
Every adoption.
Every prayer.
Every person who tells someone else that rescue can look different.
All of it helps build this dream.
Because without this Little Red Barn, there would be no Potato Shark.
And the world is a whole lot better with Mike in it.
Every soul has a story. Every life is worth the chance to have one.
5,600 Dream Builders.

Together, we're building a future where more animals get the same thing Mike got:
